How to never get locked out again: 2022 Edition

We’ve all been there one way or another: keys to the property are left inside and the door closes. As you realise what’s happening, it’s too late. You’ve been locked out - what to do?

If you live with your family, it’s not a big problem, you could just wait for someone to come home and rescue you. But what if you live solo, or are currently staying on holiday in a rented apartment and realise you’ve misplaced your keys and can’t find them?

Don’t worry because there are a couple of ways you can fix this situation stress-free. Some of these are more on the prevention side - so make sure you set up your keys using one of the solutions as soon as you finish reading this!

  1. Keep spare key of keys in a nearby KeyNest Point with 24/7 access

(yes, that’s us! How exciting!)

This is the easiest way to prevent getting locked out, promise. And one that you can use anytime, as long as you have access to the Internet. Just set it up once - as soon as you can - and it will be ready to use in any unexpected case in the future.

Start by finding your nearest KeyNest Point - it’s usually a 24/7 corner store, sometimes a cafe or a petrol station store. You can find the nearest Point using this map.

There are over 4,000 available Points and in countries like the UK or France, we have 7 minute walk from every single home located in major cities.

Start here: find a nearby Point, create an account, and set up a key online, by naming it clearly. Then finish the registration process (takes 2 minutes) and pay the fee (£5.95).

Once the process is done, just bring the key (physically) with you to the Point. It will get tagged with our special trackable fob, and registered in the system.

From now on, you can:

a) generate a collection code for yourself anytime (via KeyNest App or website), and use it to pick up the key from the Point whenever needed

b) Share the key with friends and family in case you’re travelling and want them to come over and water the plants, or someone is coming to visit you and stay over for a while. Just generate the collation code and share it with a friend, done!

2) For your main key: a wireless key tracker (key finder)

This is to make sure you can always locate your “main” key, the one that tends to be left in the car or mistakenly dropped into your shopping bag.

There are many options for a long-life battery-powered tracker. It’s a fob that you can attach to the keyring and it’s always on. You have to download a free app to make this work, usually.

After attaching the fob and getting the app, you’re set up. In case you lose track of the keys, just open the app and let it “navigate you” towards the key. In case it's lost a bit further, there’s a map that will guide you through.

In case you’re that person, who can never find a car in a shopping mall’s parking lot, this tracker has one more function: if you leave keys in the car, the app will get you to your car, even if you forgot where you parked.

3) Run a quick key check before leaving home

This could seem silly, but well, simple solutions are sometimes the best.

Before you leave home, make sure to check your pockets or wallet for keys. If you have standard hours when you leave home for work or school, set up an alert (a loud one) to remind you to check for keys.

One more good solution is available if you have an iPhone. If you put an AirTag on your key, you can set up the “notify when left behind” setting on your phone. You will immediately know if your phone and air tag are separated. Just make sure to drop your key not too close to the entry doors - so you get notified before, not after you leave home.

And there you go! 3 simple solutions to ensure you never get locked out of your home ever again. Hopefully, with these, you will never have to worry about missing keys. Because, hey, it’s 2022 - “there’s an app for anything”!
